Boy, Italy is really making messes of things lately! I and others are afraid that we will lose all credability, however, we still have great food and weather, and natural beauty, and history and wonderful museums and art. Thank goodness! Italy has a lot to offer, but if you read the paper and look at the news, we are in a nice mess!

Mamma mia, l'Italia sta facendo un bel "casino" in questi tempi! Io, ed altri hanno paura che perderemo tutta la nostra credibilità, comunque, abbiamo ancora ottimo cibo, il tempo è bello, c'è tanta storia, e bei musei e arte. Italia ha molto da offrire ma se uno legge il giornale, e guardi le notizie in tv, siamo proprio in un bel casino!

I know how I feel.
I think how I feel may be different from many of the people's feelings.
I may be wrong.
We are influenced by what we read and see on tv. THAT is the powerful message of how we get our information, thus, our thoughts about what has happened.
I personally feel terribly sorry. Sorry for the loss, the pain, the ruining of many families' lives. The deaths, and also, about the need of people to not only see the comander of the ship who made huge costly mistakes, but the need to point fingers and blame, but to blame in a aggressive way. That is the part I don't like.
I put myself in his shoes.
I don't like to make his suffering worse.
He is at fault most likely from what is written, and from his own acknowledgement of what he did wrong.
But I don't like the "joking" that is coming out on tv, or on the web, to make it all something else to laugh about, or joke about.
It is hurtful enough. It is no time for rubbing in the horrifying mistake, or to make those still waiting for their loved ones to MAYBE return, to make light of a solemn and sad time.
I can understand when a dictator of a country is made fun of, when a person who is evil inside is torn apart, I do not do it but I can understand it. But I can't imagine doing that to a normal person, who, unfortunately made a HUGE mistake, and more than one. My viewpoint may not be shared by many, I don't know, these are my own personal thoughts.

The Dilemma

I have a question. For anyone reading this blog who wants to reply.
I just visited a store, an unusual one, of a very particular and likeable young man.
He and I get along just fine, but today he told me a story that I don't know exactly what to think.
Actually, I have my own opinion about it, which I will write at the end of this description of what he told me.
He said that he had just gotten back from a very expensive 4-star hotel at a very prestigious place in Italy.
He said that in the dining room were some foreigners (I won't say from which country they come, so as to not offend anyone here) and they had their SHOES OFF.
My friend of the store was VERY upset! He was paying about 250 euro a night to stay in this hotel and felt that the people were not correct to be so casual as if they were in their own homes, AND that the Italian management should have done something.
I told him my idea: it was the management's fault. The people may well feel that they, due to a different culture, are allowed to do such a thing. I feel, let's always give the benefit of a doubt to the people from another country unless we know 100% all their cultural habits. So, what do YOU think?

I love to think that people can have a few minutes of fame, even those who never imagine it, who never have the possibility. Just a few minutes to say "here I am" or "I'm in this world too, take a look at me!"
This is one of two boys I saw often, because they "guarded" the apartment building we stayed in in the year 2007. Six weeks in China, taking loads of photos and really enjoying it.

Amo pensare che le persone possano avere qualche minuto di fama, anche quelli che non l'hanno mai immaginato. Solo qualche minuto per dire "Eccomi" oppure "Io sono in questo mondo, guardami!"
Questo è una guardia che vedevo spesso, che faceva la guardia al nostro condominio dove siamo stati per sei settimane nell'anno 2007. Ho fatto tante fotografie e mi è piaciuto immensamente.

...but WHAT is NORMAL to an artist?
I took the show down today, and that meant loading up the car (actually, two cars) and unpacking everything at home. Not only THAT, but since we painting our place this summer, the paintings I have never actually were put up yet. So........that meant, take the show down, and put my paintings up at home!
Lots of nails these days, lots of deciding, and lots of paintings and wrapping of paintings everywhere!
For some that is un-normal, for me, I guess you could say it is back to normal.

Che cos'è NORMALE per un'artista?
Ho tolto la mostra, e quello significava caricare la macchina (veramente, 2 macchine) ed a casa, togliere tutto di nuovo. Non solo quello ma siccome quest'estate abbiamo imbiancato casa, non avevo mai messo su i miei dipinti ed allora, ho tolto dalla mostra e sto mettendo su i quadri a casa!
Tanti chiodi in questi giorni, e molte decisioni da fare, e molti quadri in giro e molta carta e plastica che li avvolge. Per qualcuno questo non è molto normale, ma per me, posso dire tutto è tornato alla normalità.

The weather was beautiful last week in Los Angeles, sunny and warm. People were wearing sandals in November.
But one thing that does give the idea of autumn are the trees. So many luxurious colors, like this one on the block where I lived as a child and where my parents still reside.

Interesting people on my flight - Los Angeles, Rome

WELL!!!! FINALLY BACK IN ITALY!!
THAT was an interesting trip....because I love watching people. There were some INCREDIBLE people to see this time, so original, so totally different to those I am used to seeing!
Not only did I SEE some original styles, very colorful, and some who were also quite amusing, but I met some VERY unique people, spoke to some, and heard some stories that were completely new. Travelling is great for this - you can meet people, and each one has their own story.

SAMI
Waiting in a LONG line at the L.A. airport, was a young man, probably about thirty years old. We talked about the length of the line, and I asked him where he came from. He was born in Marakesh, Morocco, but lived in Paris in the past, and spent a lot of time travelling. He had been to Los Angeles now visiting friends, his second time there.
Although he was quite young, he was very well informed about politics. He said he began the day by looking on the net at three different viewpoints, three newspapers, and then chose the articles that interested him. He said that France (as well as Italy) was not doing well at this moment. He said he was surprised also at how "laid back" Los Angeles was, and although quite fun to visit, could not live there. It seemed also to Sami (and myself) that people don't realize how Europe is doing, that Europe is very far from California so, people aren't that knowledgeable about our problems here. But we both agreed that we had a wonderful time here, and my conversation with this young man made the wait in line more enjoyable.

THE WOMAN FROM ALGERIA
Sitting in my same row on the plane was a woman my age from Algeria. At first she was quiet, then she asked me in broken English "You come from..?" We immediately spoke, and I discovered that she knows 8 languages! This can happen in various countries in Europe, people know many languages, because their countries border others, or their lives make it necessary to learn other languages. She had 5 children, three of them married. Some of them live in Los Angeles, and she goes there up to three times a year. Her son sends her a ticket. At a certain point she and I stood up (we were in the bulk head seats, right at the front) and I was stretching, she also was doing some movements to help knees that were a problem to her, especially during the flight. I joked that we could lead the plane in exercises, and this got a pleasant smile and laugh from her.

THE MAN....WITH A PLANT FROM IRAN
THIS was a first for me!! At one point a man was standing, holding a glass, and speaking to the above woman (both of them spoke Farsi). In the glass was a little PLANT!! I curiously asked him what and how he could be holding this and taking a plant...to Iran!! He said that coming INTO the USA you could not take anything like this, but coming OUT of the States, you could. It was aplant from his relative's garden, and he wanted to grow it in Iran!
We talked, and he told me his daughter had just had her first art show in Beverly Hills! What a wonderful thing, I said. At that point he asked me what I did, and when I said I was an artist, he asked for my business card. The exchange of conversation was pleasant, and he said he would show my card to his daughter.

THE TWO WOMEN...IN RED AND WHITE
As soon as I arrived to my seat on the plane, there was a woman in red and white....and with platinum blond hair. And a HAT! A baseball hat, in red. She had made a mistake about her seat, hadn't read carefully, and giggled when her friend (who was a similar version of herself, both dressed the same, as if a team but I don't know what for!), both with the same kind of hair, and both who had undergone surgery or shots for large lips, which made the two even more amusing to see....probably in their middle or late forties, dressing like two teenagers......finally I got my seat. They sat together, each time calling much attention to themselves when they got up, totally glowing in their white pants and red tops, and the attention continued when they arrived at the Amsterdam airport, stopping people who smiled and stared.

THE LEOPARD HAIRED WOMAN
Arriving to the beautiful airport in Amsterdam, the most incredible hair style ever seen on a 60+ year woman. She was seated, probably waiting for her flight. The hair was like this. Short, but long enough on top for a RED AND WHITE striped pattern. The hair was straight, sticking up and dyed, naturally, to form large stripes. On the sides.....a LEOPARD pattern. All around was the design of real leopard skin. I only had a moment to see her, as I was walking with my carryon to get to the next flight, but I noticed that the leopard motif carried over into her shirt or jacket...it too leopard print. Interesting, original, totally UNIQUE!!

After seeing and meeting the above people, and having a long flight from Los Angeles to Amsterdam, I still had a few hours until my next flight to Rome. Luckily in this airport there were marvelous lounges and all types of sofas and chairs to relax in. I found one with music incorporated into speakers, right and left, where one could use a small laptop computer attached to the comfortable chair/sofa, and listen to and watch videos about artists in Holland, or music of various kinds. I chose to watch six short videos of the artists, after falling asleeep with my carryon bagge in front of me, and clutching onto purse and camera case for about an hour.

Crazy Los Angeles

Living in Italy and then coming back to my hometown, Los Angeles is CRAZY!!
Things are so different here. Lots of things are so much easier.
I feel like a foreigner when I am back here! Each time I discover the new things of each year. There is always so much progress here.
Not that progress is so good always, but it is helpful, often very interesting, and like I said it makes people's lives easier.

Abitare in Italia e poi' tornare alla citta' dove sono cresciuta e' pazzesco!
Tutto e' talmente diverso qui. E tante cose fanno la vita molto piu' facile negli Stati Uniti.
Mi sento sempre come uno straniero qui, ogni volta che ci torno. Ed ogni volta scopro cose nuove perche' c'e' tanto progresso negli Stati Uniti.
Non che il progresso sia una cosa buono, non sempre. Ma spesso aiuta a vivere, e spesso e' molto interessante.

Interesting, being in my hometown. Sad, camera broken!!!
Luckily I took pictures on the plane, around the neighborhood. But not as many as I would have liked. Still one week to go.
Beautiful warm weather today, old friends, new ones, Mexican food, conversing, comparing our lives.
Travel is wonderful. People are interesting.

Interessante essere nella citta' della mia gioventu. Triste che la mia macchina fotografica non funziona in questi giorni!!

Fortunatamente ho fatto diverse foto sull'aereo, intorno alla citta' dove abito, ma non tante come avrei voluto.
Ancora una settimana a Los Angeles. Il tempo e' stupendo, vecchi amici, anche amici nuovi, cibo Messicano, conversazione, ci confrontiamo le nostre vite. Viaggiare e' fantastico, le persone sono molto interessanti.

From my little medieval town in the Umbrian hills, to a big bustling city in California, Los Angeles. Here I come!
It is quite a change flying from an airport with the view underneath of rolling hills and greenery, to the lights and freeways of Los Angeles. Almost a difference of black and white.
Takes me a couple of days to get used to the difference. Each have their good points and their bad points, like everywhere in the world.
Here is a photo of an American tourist in Assisi....proudly wearing a very American shirt!
So.....better get ready, just another ten days and off I go.

The famous Biennale art exhibition at Venice, Italy is a very worthwhile exhibition to see. The whole city is filled with shows of all kinds from all countries.
This girl, on a running machine, was perched high above on an armored car. It was a beautiful day at i Giardini of Venice, where a large part of the exhibitions were held.

ACTUALLY.....this new portrait (this is just a detail) of a girl sitting on a sofa, is from a photo I took of a girl I met, only she was dark-haired, and the outfit she was wearing was nothing like this (except for the stripes). BUT the composition was the same, and the look on her face was very similar.
SHE motivated me to do this painting....what do you think?

This was such a FANTASTIC PLATE!!! They served it during the photography show at Bibbiena, Una Giornata Italiana.......and I promised I would put these photos on my blog.
But the MEAT!!!!! It was cooked with TRUFFLES!!!!! And if you don't think that was GOOOOOODDD!!!!! You are wrong, it was pure HEAVEN!!

Questo era un piatto SQUISITO!!! La Verna, del Pro Loco di Bibbiena dove è stata la mostra fotografica (e continua ora fino alla fine di novembre) Una Giornata Italiana.....ed io ho promesso questa coppia simpatica che avrei messo queste foto sul mio blog.
Ma la CARNE!!!! E' stata cucinata con il TARTUFO!!!!!! E se non pensi che quella carne era fantastica......STAI PROPRIO SBAGLIANDO!!! Era PARADISO!!!

This is one my DELISHOES right in the middle of many Italian tiles used to make roofs, here in Italy. The tiles were stacked at the farmhouse of a friend of mine, perhaps taken off an old building, or to be used to make a new roof. Kitchen was covered in plastic, but lunch was over and it was time for an expresso coffee!
So what was I to do? Just go around the plastic, light up the machine and then....serve the coffee! Here I am in a very hot kitchen, serving a very hot coffee!

La cucina era coperta in plastica, ma il pranzo era finito ed era ora per un espresso! Allora, che dovevo fare? Girare intorno alla plastica, accendere il caffè e poì...servire il caffè! Eccomi in una cucina caldissima, servendo un caffè caldissimo!

Three days at the seaside at the Natural Park of Ritigliano. We stayed at my friend's lovely little home in Campiglia Maritima and took a little drive also to Populonia. Here are some shots taken with my little Olympus camera.

Tre giorni al mare al Parco Naturale di Ritigliano. Siamo stati a casa della mia amica nel paese di Campiglia Maritima e poì siamo andati con la macchina a Populonia, un paese bellissimo. Ecco qualche foto fatto con la mia piccola Olympus.

This seaweed came up on the beach and at night disappeared again! However, the water was nice and clear.

What a treat! And what a view, and relaxing bar/restaurant in Follonica, The Tirrenum Sea, in Italy.

La serata prima del mio compleanno, a questo bellissimo posto a Follonica, al mar Tirreno in Italia. Questo è il bar fuori, con cuscini, tavolini, musica ed una vista stupenda. Dentro, il ristorante è bello, ma fuori ancora più bello!

PAINTING WITH WINE AT TORGIANO DURING THE EVENT I VINARELLI OF TORGIANO
A fun, original, artistic event at Torgiano, every year, attracting hundreds of tourists, locals, and mostly, artists who come to paint with wine and watercolours!
Here are some of the photos I took last night, and some taken of me with my (funny) watercolor of my duck people. Actually, the mouths are cut out, and the teeth drawn on another page underneath.

Un evento molto divertente, a Torgiano, Perugia. Ogni anno vengono tanti turisti, locali, e soprattutto artisti che vengono per dipingere con vino ed acquarelli.
Ecco qualche foto che ho scattato ieri sera, e qualcuna scattata anche di me insieme al mio (pazzesco) dipinto dei "duck people". Veramente, le bocche sono state tagliate, e sporgono dalla carta - i denti sono disegnati sotto su un altro foglio.

That is just how I feel....we are leaving for the seaside for two days, after working like crazy on the house during our painting of each room. Not done yet, but it will sure feel good to relax and do, well, just about nothing! Like going 100 miles per hour in a car, to "park".

Mi sento così...partiamo per il mare per due giorni, dopo aver lavorato come pazzi qui a casa durante l'imbiancatura di tutte le stanze. Non abbiamo ancora finito, ma sarà proprio rilassante a fare niente! Come andare in macchina a 100 miglie per ora, a "parcheggiare".

Thoughts....about how difficult it is to have your house painted! You have to move everything from room to room, and clean everything, and make decisions of how to make more space and what to throw away.
And you have to decide about everything, and discuss it with the family. Everyone has their own idea about things, and that means a lot of discussing.
It is tiring!! BUT you really do get the house in order! And throw things out! And freshen up the walls and corner and everything!!
So..............tomorrow is another day. MOre cleaning and unboxing and boxing and painting (not us, but a real painter!). Will be glad when it is over. In the meantime, just taking a break here, enjoying sitting down, and saying hi to anyone out there ; ).

Non ho l'energia per tradurre tutto....l'imbiancare ti toglie l'energia!! Abbiamo un signore, molto bravo ma il lavoro è davvero tanto, e si stanca molto ad organizzare tutto, mettere la roba in scatola, pulire, decidere, anche in famiglia non una cosa facile...!
Domani si continua, e finalmente presto sarà tutto pronta!

One of my very favorite places....in the mountains, not terribly far from Umbria, Castelluccio di Norcia (125 kilometri from Perugia) a great place to feel very very far away from civilization.

Uno dei miei posti preferiti...nelle montagne, a circa 125 kilometri da Perugia...un posto per sentirsi molto molto lontano dalla città.

A few weeks ago, these scenes were filled with various flowers. But even yesterday, the rich tones were breathtaking.

Qualche settimana fà la scena a Castelluccio era piena di fiori colorati. Ma anche ieri, i colori era mozzafiato.

See Italy in the background? Those trees were planted to make the shape of Italy appear...almost magically!

Vedi l'Italia nello sfondo? Gli alberti sono stati piantati per far apparire l'Italia....quasi magicamente!

Painting one's home in ITALY

It is a BIG deal! It means moving all your furniture, books, everything to the middle of the room, on the terrace, in boxes so that the painter can paint. And it means, here I am in the kitchen, with a laptop, reaching out to say hello, and let people know that photos of this ordeal will show up another time, when things get back to "normal".

E' una cosa GRANDE!! Significa spostare mobili, libri, tutto al centro della stanza, sulla terrazza, in scatole così che l'imbianchino possa imbiancare. E significa che eccomi quà in cucina, con un laptop, e provo a salutare tutti, e farvi sapere che più tardi pubblicherò anche delle foto di questa esperienza, quando tutto torna ad essere "normale".

SEE MORE......WELL......from the BACKSIDE of an elephant you definitely see more of something!! Actually, I just realized that an elephant sort of looks similar on the backside, as he/she does on the front! With that long long tail.....anyhow, back or front he is HUGE!!!

In fact, people always say to me "You can eat what you want, you are so TALL". And I reply, well, so are elephants!

VEDERE PIU'....beh, dal dietro, un elefante è senz'altro enorme!! E si vede più di una certa cosa..... Dal dietro veramente un elefante sembra come davanti, con quella coda così lunga....

Infatti, spesso la gente mi dice "Sei così alta puoi mangiare quello che vuoi!" E io rispondo, beh anche gli elefanti sono alti, e guarda loro!!
