Why would I be thihnking about donuts on Saturday afternoon....perhaps one was missing with my cup of tea today?
They are really junky but good. And pretty too!

EATING and other things....in Italy
- Toaster -- it took me years to buy a toaster. I was without one for the longest time. And now, it is so easy to make myself a delicious piece of bruschetta, or sort of like bruschetta. I toast the bread and put little oil on it. Then a little bit of salt. SO GOOD! If I want to make real bruschetta I should rub garlic on it. But, when I just want something warm and fast, and a little salty, boy, that simple bruschetta sure takes good too.
- Soups...there are easy and fun to make. Whatever you have in the house, just throw it in!! Right now I am boiling up some potatoes, squash, carrots, green cicory (cicoria) and a little tomato from a can. Added a bay leaf, and later will add salt. There is also celery. And maybe I will add a few peas. See, anything and everything you can find, put it in!
- Ricotta -- when I go to buy it, I usually ask them for 100 grams or 200 grams or so. It is either made from cow milk or sheep milk, each having their own flavor. I usually get the mixed one, both cow and sheep. That way I don't have to decide which to get : )
- One euro a kilo. Right now, people are really watching their money. But we all know that, worldwide. There is the Saturday morning market here, you can find many fruits and veggies for one euro a kilo. The same quality you buy for almost twice that in the stores. And also there is a more biologically produced market on Thursday morning and another on Thursday in another part of town. If you keep driving around, you can save on fruit (and pay more on gas!)
- Mozzaella -- did you know you can find it in a braid? It's called treccia, which means braid (like hair). They are nice to look at and tasty to eat. But mozzarella is also sold in little balls like cherries. And it is soft and milky. Yes, it is good!
- YUM!! Boy I made a good pasta today. Prepared some pumpkin (fresh, in my pressure cooker til soft) then I mashed it up, added a lot of cream...sinful but good...THEN put in olive oil, nutmeg, and a little pepperoncino. Served on pasta it was so so good!!
- Lunch and dinner -- these used to be very big meals in Italy, well, luckily, times have changed. It used to be that there would be a pasta dish at lunch AND a meat dish, plus vegetables, maybe two kinds, fruit and perhaps even a dessert (well, for company yes). Well, dinner would come along and you would have to prepare also a soup or something like that, and a protein and vegetable. Fruit at the end of the meal. Two big meals, and two times washing pots and pans. Now, luckily, people have lightened up, sometimes just pasta and salad, and at dinner meat and vegetable. Less work, but still, too much work most of the time. Italians love to eat, and they eat well!!
- HOme made breadcrumbs. WHY would you make your own? Because the stuff you buy in a bag is salty, has spices in it. If you want a simple bread crumb, especially if you have European bread which is simple and often contains no salt, just heat in an over and then grate in your electric blender (I have a blade that does the work, inserting it all from the top of the machine). The crumbs can be used for all sorts of things, good to have them on hand always.
- SFORMATI - is what I made for lunch today. You take eggs, and mix in all sorts of things. At the end it becomes sort of like a souffle. I added parmesan, broccoli, ricotta, and a little milk and nutmeg. I always experiement. Something hot for a very very cold day.
- Toast....and a pinch of salt and some olive oil....YUMMY!

I'm an American artist who has lived in Italy most of her life. I love to travel, meet people, art, and life. HOW TO SPEAK ITALIAN...in 60 seconds
- HOW COME? Do you know how to say How Come? You jkust say "Come mai?" Comb-may my...would be the right pronunciation.
- Pronto...means hello, when you answer the phone. It actually means ready....Sono pronto (if you are a man) or Sono pronta means I am ready, for a woman or girl. Pronto is the correct way to answer the phone.
- Vorrei un pò di pane. This means, I would like a little bread. The VORREI is the very polite way to ask for something, meaning I would like. If you dont have time, and don't remember you can get away with VOGLIO which means I want. Just smile when you use this tense, it is not as polite "I WANT" but people will understand your Italian is not as sophisticated as it should be, and will understand : )
- Bel film. This means it is a good film. OR you can say il film è bello. This means the film is good or nice. Bello just means that it is beautiful, and it can mean anything at all which is masculine (a book, a film, a country). If you say bella, you mean it about anything that is femminine, a girl, a house, a day. GEtting confused? Time to get to bed for me and have una bella dormita (a nice sleep).
- PASTA...is the name for all the different kinds of noodles. The little ones, ones for soups is called pastina. And when you prepare it with sauce and it is ready to eat, you can call it pastaciutta. I don't know how many kinds there are of pasta, but a lot. Homemade or store bought, it is good and a staple in the homes of Italians.
- E' vero? That means, is that true? You can use it, even as a casual little phrase....like E' vero che è una bella giornata? Isn't it true that today is a beautiful day?
- Per me, per te, con me, con te. It means....for me, for you, with me with you!
- NEVE. That is the word of the week: snow. And the verb to snow is nevicare. You pronounce the words Nev - a (like the letter a). And the verb you pronounce nev- ee- car- a. And that is exactly what we are waiting for la neve!
